Digital image correlation analysis of laminated bamboo under transverse compression

The use of laminated bamboo in structural applications is increasing, but the failure mechanisms material need further investigation. This study investigated under compressive loading using digital image correlation (DIC). Notably, unique speckled appearance a transverse section, resulting from spatial distribution vascular fibre bundles parenchyma matrix, was directly used for DIC; no sample preparation necessary. A 45° degree shear face originated joint between several strips and led to ultimate samples. However, when strain exceeded ~30% analysis broke down due sections specimen shearing off sample. Our methodology demonstrates potential imaging during mechanical testing reveal complex full-field in-plane distribution, development on-set material.
